BEHIND THE WORK

street life

“I wanted to capture the liveliness of southern Spain through observing Malaga's vibrant street life. As the spectator, we see life as a source of entertainment without sensing injustice. I want to provoke a more conscious form of seeing.”

music

“A recorded audio of a beggar singing in the intense, cante jondo flamenco style at our table one evening was the initial inspiration for this piece.

The beggar is the central figure in the work. The depth and intensity of his voice embody the core themes of this work - music, street life, and the experience of homelessness, even within the beauty of the place I was visiting.”

bull rings

“Embedded at the heart of Spanish culture, the bullring stands as a center of entertainment and drama. Amidst the spectacle is the Bull itself - a powerful symbol of entrapment within its own environment. In a similar way, we listen to the beggar's voice because it feels authentically Spanish, without acknowledging despair within the voice.

For this work, I wanted to evoke the chaotic energy of a bullring or the famous bull runs through the streets of Spain.”

The composition aims to shift the spectator's perspective, moving from distant observer to experiencing the world from the point of view of the individual caught amidst the chaos.

UNTHINKABLE FILM FESTIVAL 2025

in collaboration with Hull Artist Research Initiative

WARM THE OUTSIDE POOL UP.

After a callout inviting people to describe their city in one sentence, “Warm the outside pool up” was selected as the prompt. 32 artists then created works in response.

‘I’m on The Edge’ captures both sonic and pictorial snapshots of people living on the margins of society, starting with the artist’s own street, Westbourne Avenue, Hull.

“I walk past Westbourne House everyday. Through documented sketches of the people I see within the Westbourne House community, as well as what i hear, this work aims to try to break that feeling of silence that is quite literally on our doorstep. All materials used are natural and decomposable… a bit like our world at the minute.”

“Hearing is seeing if you care to listen. Warm the outside pool up.”

Institute of Arts Hull

Working primarily with oil pastels on canvas and wood, she transforms everyday scenes into vivid, meditative reflections on the emotional and spiritual turmoil of life. Her use of field recordings and sensory observations shapes her pieces, blurring the boundaries between drawing, sound, and experience—creating work that fosters a sense of reconnection with the world around us.

Step into a sensory journey through our ever-changing world. Experience past and present moments that reflect the shifting mood of society and the ongoing dialogue between culture and the human experience.

Precious’s large-scale, vibrant series Conscious invites viewers into a sensory exploration of the intersection between visual and sound art, experienced through the lens of synaesthesia

An exploration of the human spirit is at the core of the artist’s work, routed in themes of human connection, and disconnection, informed by political and cultural moments. What connects us, and what divides us? Using immersive techniques, Precious draws on her surroundings—often responding to events in Hull, while also reflecting on her travels and historical contexts.
